I've been teaching since 1975, and I still love it. South Side Middle School, which, sadly, closed in 2009, was my home for the first thirty-four years of my career. Last year I taught at Highland High School, which, sadly, closed in June 2010. Highland Junior High opened its doors this August to 7th, 8th, and 9th graders. I am teaching two theatre classes (freshmen), two Honors English (8th grade) and two English Remediation (8th grade). This is my first year to teach theatre in the ACSC classroom, although I have directed drama programs in the community and at church.
Some of my goals are to organize the backstage area for technical instruction, charter a Highland Junior High School chapter of the International Thespian organization, and produce a junior musical in the spring. Of course, the more important and long-lasting goals are to build character, tolerance, and instill an appreciation of theatre in each of the participants. For more than twenty years, I have been taking English students to Indiana Repertory Theatre in Indianapolis, one of the best professional theatres in the world. This year should be no exception. I look forward to the best year ever!
